CHAPTER NINE

Seven Years Ago

5 days after escape

“A car crash?!”

“That’s what they think happened,” Quinn confirmed solemnly.

Silver was incredulous. Of all the explanations, it had to be this? “How? Why would they think I died?”

“Apparently, the night you disappeared, there was a really bad accident in the area. It was all over the news. One victim was found, but her body was beyond recognition. Two others were missing and never recovered, presumed lost somewhere around the crash site. Your DNA was found in the car, so naturally, police assumed you were one of them.”

Three victims. Silver remembered the two other girls who had been taken with her, one of whom she never saw again after that night. The other became her bunkmate Shauna, who remained back at the estate. Silver wasn’t there for any crash, but she vividly recalled Grace at one point calling someone to get rid of the beat-up car she had used to pick up Shiloh. Apparently, the move was to hide their kidnapping.

And cover up a murder.

Silver’s stomach lurched, and she barely had time to grab the paper bag that Quinn handed her before she erupted in a panic attack.

It wasn’t enough that Silver had to lose her mother in a horrific accident, now her family was grieving her own supposed death for the very same reason. And to make matters even worse, the night of her kidnapping had permanently scarred her and cemented her fear of car accidents.

The world truly was a cruel place.

“I’m gonna take us somewhere more private,” Quinn announced before they drove away. “There are some tissues in the glove compartment.”

Silver didn’t have it in her to reply in any way. Her world was falling apart for the hundredth time in a year, but this was the first time she couldn’t keep her reaction at bay. Her breathing was constricted, her sobs so uncontrollable, she was sure they could be heard from outside the car. After staying strong for so long, she had earned the right to break down in peace. It didn’t even matter to her right now that Quinn was in the car. She just wanted to scream and hit something until this helpless desperation stopped and she was too numb to feel anything anymore.

Suddenly, she found herself longing for things she would never have again. A bowl of hot soup from Billy. A few words of encouragement from Shauna. A bear hug from Devon. Even a simple look or a hand on her shoulder from Adam. Any of these things used to be enough to keep her going during her low moments at the estate. Hell, even Levi’s calming presence would have been welcome right about now.

But that made her feel even worse.

It wasn’t right to want things she had willingly run away from or barely even knew. She should want the things that were familiar from her old life. A cup of coffee on the front porch with her father. Movie nights with her brother where they laughed and threw popcorn at the screen or at each other.
